One of many Muwashahat that was composed by Sayed Darwish. The Muwashah (plural Muwashahat) is a complex vocal form based on classical Arabic poems from Andalusia (hence muwashahat are sometimes qualified as Andalusian even though their composed melodies are invariably from Syria through Egypt, and only date back from the last century or two.). This is an example of Sayid Darwish's mastery of classical Arabic music on top of his ability to compose contemporary catchy songs that would appeal to everyone.
واحدة من العديد من الموشحات التي قام بتأليفها سيد درويش.
الموشح هو أحد القوالب المركّبة فهي تبنى على شعر فصيح من الأندلس (ولذلك تُدعى الموشحات الأندلسية على الرغم من أنها نشأت وازدهرت في سوريا و مصر في القرنين المنصرمين).
يعتبر هذا الموشح مثال على تمكن سيد درويش من الموسيقى العربية التقليدية، بالإضافة إلى قدرته على تأليف أغاني معاصرة جذابة تناسب الجميع.

Aho Dah elli Sar(This is what has become to be) - أهو ده اللي صار

The lyrics to this song were written by Sheikh Mohamed Younis al-Qadi, an activist at Al-Azhar who used to wear a turban and kaftan. One time, as he was being detained, the Deputy Minister for Interior grabbed al-Qadi by his clothes and said, "Instead of all that rubbish you say, find a way to manufacture a turban like this in your own country.' The incident resonated with the poet, and in response he wrote the lyrics, "Why put the blame on me, Sir, when the boon of the land is not in our hand?" Like many of Sayed Darwish's songs, this one made its way from the squares of the 1919 revolution to Tahrir Square in 2011.
كتب كلمات الأغنية الشاعر محمد يونس القاضي، وقد كان أزهريا يرتدي الجبة والقفطان في إحدى مرات اعتقاله، أمسكه وكيل وزارة الداخلية من ردائه وقال له بدل ماتقول الكلام الفارغ دة، دوّر إزاي تصنع جبة في بلدك الأول". أثرت الحادثة في الشاعر، فكتب يرد اللوم بلوم آخر " تلوم عليا إزاي يا سيدنا، وخير بلادنا ماهوش بإيدنا ! " وجدت هذه الأغنية طريقها، كالعديد من أغاني درويش من ميادين ثورة ۱۹۱۹ وحتى ميدان التحرير ۲۰۱۱.

This song is in the form of Taqtuqa from the play “Esh” that was presented by Naguib Al Rihani theatre group in 1919. The song is about girls selling flowers in the street and their attempts to get the attention of people in the street.
The Taqtuqa (plural Taqatiq) is the standard 3-4 minute Arabic song with multiple verses and a repeating chorus. Taqatiq usually use simple rhythm and have accessible lyrics and a melody that's simple to memorise and sing along to.
هذه الطقطوقة هي جزء من مسرحية اش التي قدمتها فرقة نجيب الريحاني سنة ١٩١٩ و تدور حول بائعات الورد في الشارع و محاولتهم لجذب اهتمام المارة.
الطقطوقة (مفرد جمعه طقاطيق) هي الأغنية التي يبلغ طولها ٣-٤ دقائق وتتكرر فيها عدة مقاطع وفيها بطانة أيضاً. وعادةً ما تستخدم إيقاعات بسيطة كالمقسوم وشعرها ولحنها سهل الحفظ والغناء.

Zorouni (Visit me) - زوروني

The story of the song goes that the famous songwriter and poet, Mohamed Younis al-Qadi, fell ill once and was bedridden without any cure or medicine. The news of his illness spread, and his family, friends, and colleagues started visiting him, including his only sister.
There was a complete estrangement between Mohamed Younis and his sister due to a dispute over inheritance that had reached the courts. When she visited him, their sincere meeting touched his heart, and they embraced each other. Their tears expressed regret for their past conflict, and they vowed to resolve their legal disputes if the poet recovered from his illness.
From this point, Mohamed Younis began writing the lyrics of the song, which was composed by Sayed Darwish in 1917. It was first sung by Hamed Morsi and later by many artists.However, the song gained widespread popularity when Fairuz sang it in the early 1960's.
There is another narrative that suggests the melody was originally composed by the Iraqi musician Othman Al-Mosuli with different lyrics. According to this version, Prophet Muhammad visited him in a dream and invited him to visit his grave, inspiring him to write the song based on the dream. However, there is no confirmed information about the original composer of the song.
ترجع قصة الأغنية أن المؤلف الغنائي والزجال المشهور محمد يونس مرض ذات مرة ولزم الفراش ولم يُفده علاج ولا أدوية، فوصل خبر مرضه للجميع وبدأ يزوره الأهل والأصدقاء والزملاء ومن بين الزائرين كانت شقيقته الوحيدة.
كان بين محمد يونس وأخته قطيعة تامة بسبب تنازُع على الميراث وصل إلى المحاكم، لذلك كان لزيارتها بلهفة صادقة وقع طيب على قلبه، فتعانقا وعبّرت دموعهما عن ندم على الخصام وتعاهدا على إنهاء الخصومات القضائية حال قيام الشاعر من المرض.
كتب القاضي، "زوروني كل سنة مرة"، ولحنها سيد درويش، وغناها حامد مرسي لأول مرة في العام 1917، لكن الأغنية أخذت صدىً واسعاً بعدما غنتها "جارة القمر" فيروز في أوائل الستينيات.
ثمة رواية أخرى تقول إن صاحب اللحن هو الملحن العراقي عثمان الموصلي لكلمات مختلفة، ، و إن سبب كتابته لهذه الأغنية هو أن النبي محمد زاره في المنام ودعاه إلى زيارة قبره، ما دفعه لكتابة الأغنية من وحي الحلم لكن ليس هناك معلومات مؤكدة عن ملحن الأغنية الأصلي.

The Numbers (The workers) - (العمال) الكترة

Numbers is one of the songs featured in the play, Ring, which was performed in 1919. Another political song meant to be in the words of the workers talking about Egypt’s deteriorating economic condition during the WWI.The general feeling of disenfranchisement, the unavailability of essential goods, and the increasing poverty were subtly blamed on British wartime rationing and foreign-owned capital. Since this was a popular revolution that made out of the crescent and the cross an emblem, The song also speaks of an inclusive nation that belongs to all its children and not only to the Muslim majority, as the British had claimed.
لحن الكثرة أو العمال هو أحد ألحان رواية "رن"، كتب كلماته بديع خيري وقدمته فرقة نجيب الريحاني في ۱۹۱۹. تعبر كلمات الأغنية عن لسان حال العمال خلال الأزمة الاقتصادية التي مرت بها مصر أثناء الحرب العالمية الأولى. تتطرق الكلمات إلى نقص البضائع بسبب التقشف اثناء الحرب و تحكم الأجانب برؤوس الأموال مما يضر بمصلحة الوطن.
. ولأن الثورة كانت ثورة شعبية واتخذت من الهلال والصليب شعارا لها، فإن هذا اللحن يؤكد أن هذا الوطن ملك لأبنائه وليس للأكثرية المسلمة وحدها كما يدعي المحتل.

Or the song of the "Arwam", the most famous song among the songs of the communities, which reflects the diversity of the population of Alexandria during this period, including the Greeks who assimilated into the population of Alexandria. Some of them worked in bars, and when the bars closed due to World War I, and their source of livelihood was cut off, they worked in shoe polishing, saying, 'We polished boots, people,' meaning they started polishing shoes. The lyrics are in Egyptian Arabic with a Greek accent with some Greek words which makes the song hard to memorise. The song is from the novel 'And yet' in 1919, which included most of the songs of the communities composed by Sayed Darwish and written by his friend Badi’e Khairy.

The Artisans( This Pretty one) - الحلوة ديه (الصنايعية)

Is considered one of the most famous Arabic songs and talks about the artisans struggle with their day to day life during the economic declines in the WWI.
The song was part of a play was performed by Naguib el-Rihani's acting troupe in 1918. This was a thriving time for the theatre, with an increasing number of acting troupes competing against each other. The competition was particularly evident in the play titles, which were chosen to deliver specific messages of superiority to other acting troupes rather than reflect on play content. For example, the play title , Tell Him , was specifically geared towards announcing the troupe’s latest production. In response, another acting troupe presented the play, We Told Him; The intended meaning here being we have warned him he’ll never succeed, but went ahead anyway.
The same year, an acting troupe presented a play titled, The Best Amongst Them which promoted Naguib el-Rihani's acting troupe to respond with a play titled, Even if, meaning , despite that, we are still better.
Like the songs in the play, the lyrics are also inspired by the working-class and use the rooster’s crow as an image that conveys how water sellers are the first to roam the narrow alleyways in the early morning.
قدمت هذه الرواية فرقة نجيب الريحاني عام ۱۹۱۸ - شهدت هذه الحقبة ازدهارا للمسرح وتعددت الفرق المسرحية واشتعلت المنافسة ما بينها ظهرت هذه المنافسة في أسماء الروايات التي كانت تقدمها كل فرقة من الفرق، فلم تكن الأسماء تعكس مضمون الرواية بقدر ما توجه رسالة من فرقة الأخرى مفادها دائما أن فرقتهم هي الأفضل. فمثلا رواية قولوله التي عرضناها بالسابق كانت توجه رسالة مفادها الإعلان عن عملهم الجديد فيجيئها الرد من فرقة أخرى برواية قلنا له وهو مصطلح في العامية المصرية يفيد بأننا حذرناه مرارا من أنه لن ينجح لكنه أصر على فعله
في ذلك العام، قدمت واحدة من الفرق رواية بعنوان اللي فيهم، بمعنى أفضلهم، فردت فرقة نجيب الريحاني برواية ولو بمعنى بالرغم من ذلك، وهي الرسالة التي تعني
بالرغم من ذلك، نحن الأفضل
اللحنان ينتميان لألحان الطوائف في رواية "قولوله"، وهما كذلك مستلهمان من صيحات الديك في الصباح، ونداء السقائين في الحارات قبل الفجر بقليل

Salma ya Salama(Welcome back to safety) - سالمة يا سلامة

Probably to most famous song by Sayed Darwish well known among Egyptians and sung by school kids coing back from trips and adults alike.
The song is about the Egyptian peasants who joined the Egyptian labour corps that worked for the British Army in Egypt during the First World War's Sinai and Palestine Campaign between 1915 and 1919. As the need for more men increased, compulsory service was forced and peasants were taken from their homes and fields by local Egyptian agents to join the labour corps.
The great value of the service of the Egyptian Labour Corps was acknowledged by Edmund Allenby in his despatch of 16 December 1917 where he mentions the great value and importance of their service, their steadiness under fire and devotion to duty under difficult conditions.
This song was part of the play “Oulolo” which translates to “Tell him” that was presented in 17th of may 1919.
تحكي الأغنية قصة الفلاحين المصريين الذين كانوا جزء من فيلق العمل المصري و عملوا لصالح الجيش البريطاني أثناء حملة سيناء وفلسطين في الحرب العالمية الأولى بين عامي 1915 و 1919 تحت قيادة إدموند ألنبي. ومع تزايد الحاجة إلى المزيد من الرجال، تم فرض الخدمة الإجبارية وتم نقل الفلاحين من منازلهم وحقولهم من قبل عملاء مصريين محليين بطرق وحشية للانضمام إلى فيلق العمل.
تدور كلمات الأغنية حول الرجال السعداء بالعودة إلى ديارهم آمنين بعد رؤية الحرب وتوفير بعض المال. وقد اعترف إدموند اللنبي بالقيمة الكبيرة لخدمة فيلق العمل المصري في رسالته المؤرخة في 16 ديسمبر 1917 حيث ذكر القيمة والأهمية الكبيرة لخدمتهم، وثباتهم تحت النار وتفانيهم في أداء الواجب في ظل الظروف الصعبة.
كانت هذه الأغنية جزءًا من مسرحية "قولو له" التي عُرضت في 17 مايو 1919.
